FOLK at YALM presents Christina Alden & Alex Patterson
FOLK AT YALM presents Christina Alden & Alex Patterson
Join us for a special evening with Norwich’s own Christina Alden & Alex Patterson, an acclaimed multi-instrumentalist duo whose music is rich with intertwining harmony, sensitive musicianship and beautifully crafted songwriting.
Deeply inspired by the natural world, Christina and Alex create songs that reflect on the relationship between humans and the wild. With delicate arrangements and immersive storytelling, their performances transport audiences to wide landscapes, quiet woodlands and windswept coasts — music that feels intimate, thoughtful and deeply moving.
As established artists on the UK and European folk circuit, they have:
Completed a 23-date concert hall tour with Show of Hands (including Union Chapel and St David’s Hall, Cardiff)
Performed at Glasgow Royal Concert Hall for Celtic Connections
Headlined and appeared on main stages at leading UK folk festivals
Toured Norway, Belgium, France and Ireland
Written and self-released four albums
Composed music for a BBC Radio 4 documentary series
Achieved over one million streams on Spotify
Their harmonies are so seamlessly blended that at times they sound like a single voice, supported by expressive fiddle, guitar and layered instrumentation that reveals both technical skill and emotional depth.
“A milestone for contemporary folk songwriting” – Bright Young Folk
“A bright, lively collection of songs that plays so sweetly it evokes the sensation of a summer folk festival” – The Guardian
“Perfectly matched harmonies...at times it’s hard to tell them apart, you could be listening to a single voice” – Folk Radio UK
“Gorgeous harmonies and lush melodies...a beautiful album that transports the listener to wild landscapes and wild lives” – BBC Countryfile
“Alden’s voice is hauntingly beautiful” – Folk London
“Alex would give even the great Swarbrick himself a run for his money in terms of sheer feeling and passion” – At The Barrier
Expect an evening of atmospheric folk, rich harmony and songs rooted in landscape and story — performed by two of Norwich’s most accomplished contemporary folk artists.

Copper Ink Pot Calligraphy Workshop
Copper Ink Pot Calligraphy Workshop
Date: Saturday 19th September
Time: 10am–12pm
Tickets: £55 per person
Spend a Saturday morning learning modern calligraphy with me! This workshop provides everything you need to know, kit to take home and a hot drink is included.
No experience is necessary.
A two hour workshop - you can take some time out and spend some time on your own, or come with friends and family to try your hand at a new skill. A beginners calligraphy kit is included for you to keep and take home as well as your final work.
What is in the kit? You will have a pen holder, nib, a jar of black ink, my own handmade gold ink, along with worksheets, practise paper and some luxury card, with envelopes and gift tags and a box to store it all in.
What will we do? We will begin with an introduction to modern calligraphy techniques, some warm up strokes before practising the alphabet and then moving on to some words and styles so we can create our own pieces. There will be full guidance throughout and I will be there to help you and answer any further questions you might have.
Can I buy more card and ink colours to continue my practise and make more at home? Yes! I have lots of additional extras available to buy at each workshop, from extra practise paper and books, to my own handmade metallic inks as well as a variety of nibs, pen holders and brush pens.
But my handwriting is rubbish! That doesn’t matter at all. I’ll tell you a secret - so is mine! This is all about slowing it down, taking it easy and going with the flow. It is easier than it looks, you will have fun and you will be so proud of what you achieve!
I’m left handed - does that matter? Not at all, there are many left handed calligraphers!
Is there a group limit? Yes - there will be a maximum number of people per workshop to allow each person has full support and I can answer everyones questions should you have them.
Is food available? Yes - Yalm is a food hall located in The Royal Arcade in Norwich City Centre. Why not make more of an occasion of it and get some food at Yalm for lunch after - if you haven’t been yet then now is the perfect chance for an exciting meal out after learning something new - a perfect day!

The Zoe Francis / Jim Mullen Quartet – Norwich Jazz Club
The Zoe Francis / Jim Mullen Quartet
Norwich Jazz Club present The Zoe Francis / Jim Mullen Quartet
with
Zoe Francis (vocals)
Jim Mullen (guitar)
Liam Dunachie (organ)
Steve Brown (drums)
Zoe Francis and legendary guitarist Jim Mullen began performing together in 2013 and to date have recorded and toured four albums around the UK and in Europe. Their first album "The Very Thought Of You” was recorded live in 2014 at London’s 606 club with a stellar line-up, and their most recent release "Somewhere in The Night" (2023) received great reviews.
It was during her stay in New York, attending the workshops of great teachers (such as Barry Harris) and having the opportunity to perform with great US musicians around Manhatten and Harlem that Zoe enriched her love of a great lyric and melody. She loves to champion the classics, but also brings to light less well-trodden songs in fresh arrangements.
Multi award-winning guitarist Jim Mullen is no stranger to the UK and international jazz scenes, and in a career spanning more than five decades has recorded and toured the globe with artists such as Gene Harris, Georgie Fame, Terry Callier, Jimmy Smith, Mose Allison, The Average White Band, Brian Auger, Kokomo and Claire Martin, in addition to his 15 year partnership with saxophonist Dick Morrissey in the much-loved Morrissey-Mullen band.
Joining Zoe and Jim tonight will be the in-demand and prolific Steve Brown (drums) and Liam Dunachie (organ).

FOLK at YALM presents Tarren
FOLK AT YALM presents Tarren
Don’t miss an exclusive evening with Tarren, one of the most exciting new forces on the UK folk scene, as they take to the stage at Yalm Food Hall for this month’s FOLK AT YALM.
Music can exist outside time. The new and the old are melded expertly by Tarren with their trademark sound that is progressing the Folk genre. This is New-Folk — captivating, rhythm-driven and emotionally charged.
Blending modular hooks and minimalist forms with traditional dance rhythms, Tarren create music that feels both ancient and entirely contemporary. Their tight musicianship and intricate arrangements are delivered through a playful prism that reflects the character of the trio, taking listeners from foot-stomping exhilaration to moments of deep sensitivity.
Original and traditional material sit side-by-side in a sound world shaped by:
Sid Goldsmith (Jimmy Aldridge & Sid Goldsmith, Awake Arise)
Alex Garden (The Drystones, Harriet Riley & Alex Garden)
Danny Pedler (Pedler // Russell)
Together they combine cittern and concertina, fiddle and accordion to create their distinctive New-Folk sound.
Formed during the 2021 lockdowns through the sharing of compositions online, Tarren quickly evolved into a powerful live trio. Their debut album REVEL (2022) received widespread acclaim, drawing comparisons with Faustus and Lau’s legendary debut Lightweights and Gentlemen.
Their second studio album Outside Time (2024) presents a developed and confident sound, gaining high praise across the folk world.
“Simply an excellent Folk trio” “Thrilling” – **** Songlines
“This new album (Outside Time)… further establishes them as a new and exciting act of the Folk scene with their own unique sound” – **** The Morning Star
“The sounds of fiddle and viola, cittern and English concertina, and accordion and hurdy gurdy have rarely sounded better, nor as much fun, as they do here – a testament to the talents of the trio and a confident and welcome signifier that English folk music is in very safe hands.” – Folk Radio UK
“A Mini Folk Supergroup!” – Tradfolk
“Tarren’s music feels traditional, but also fresh and original. It’s joyful, but with deep sensitivity. A freshness that deserves to have wider appeal.” – Folking.com
Expect driving rhythms, soaring melodies and a night that celebrates the pulse of traditional dance music while pushing folk into thrilling new territory.

Will Pound is one of the most acclaimed harmonica and melodeon players of his generation, known for pushing the boundaries of his instruments with breathtaking virtuosity and deep traditional grounding. Jenn Butterworth is a sought-after guitarist and singer — awarded Musician of the Year at the Scots Trad Music Awards and nominated for a BBC Radio 2 Folk Award — renowned for her rhythmic drive, expressive playing and work with acclaimed ensembles like Kinnaris Quintet.

Summer Sessions – The Tricks
YALM is a stage sponsor again for Norwich’s Summer Sessions. We are sponsoring the Gentleman’s Walk stage – so a perfect spot to catch some great live music before or after your trip to YALM.
Blues band, the Tricks, formed in 2019, just for fun. All the members of the band are in other bands but wanted to play together. Joe Bernard and Luke Arnold, who played in bands through the 80’s, had always talked of getting together but it had never happened, and Mark Howes and Dan Renolds knew each other from a plethora of local bands. Good music brought them together. Good music keeps them playing. Performances will commence at 1:15, 2:30pm & 3:45pm and will last for around 30-40mins.
The Educator – DJ Set
Join us downstairs at YALM in the Skippers Bar and slide into the weekend with The Educator serving up his unique blend of educational beats.

Norwich Tech for Good meet-up
Norwich ‘Tech for Good’ meetup
A community of Norwich people who use Tech & Digital to do good things. Casual events, networking & learning opportunities.
Looking forward to seeing you this Thursday, 6-8pm in the private dining room upstairs at Yalm for this month’s meetup! RSVP here.
The brilliant Rose Bonner, web developer at “tech for good” agency Reason Digital, will be leading the conversation on how to even define “good” vs “bad” tech, using the example of Toilet Map, which (spoiler alert) maps toilets in the UK.
What could possibly not be ‘good’ about a useful toilet map, right? RIGHT?
Rose will take us through the history of tech for good, where it is today, and see if we can agree on what makes good tech, for a good project.

Norwich Jazz Club presents The Djangoliers
Norwich Jazz Club presents The Djangoliers
with
Zak Barrett (clarinet)
Simon Hurley (guitar)
Robert Ford (guitar)
Andy Staples (bass)
Having performed at our inaugural gig at Yalm in October 2023, Norwich Jazz Club are delighted to welcome The Djangoliers back to the venue for another lively evening of foot-tapping hot-club favourites.
Taking their cue from Django Reinhardt’s war-years line-up, where Hubert Rostaing’s clarinet replaced Stephane Grapelli’s violin, The Djangoliers specialize in performing music both written and inspired by the late, great French guitarist. As well as performing many of Django’s classic arrangements and compositions such as Nuages, Swing 42 and Manoir Des Mes Rêves, they also perform original compositions and standards from the more contemporary canon of the style now known as ‘Gypsy Jazz’.
