Monthly jazz night for Norwich. An informal evening of food, drink and vibes for the jazz lover.

The Allison Neale Quartet

with Allison Neale (alto)
Colin Oxley (guitar)
Jeremy Brown (bass)
Matt Fishwick (drums)
‘The Music of Paul Desmond and Jim Hall’

American-born altoist Allison Neale’s beautifully-crafted lines evoke the spirit of Paul Desmond and Art Pepper with whom she has a particular affinity. For this special project, altoist Allison Neale and guitarist Colin Oxley recreate the magical pairing of Paul Desmond (best known for his long-standing association with Dave Brubeck) and Jim Hall (guitarist with Sonny Rollins). Drawing from these influences, they explore their own unique musical partnership, while staying true to the nature of the original recordings, beautiful in their simplicity and elegance.

As a strong advocate of the melodic West Coast style, Allison has performed alongside leading international artists such as Adelaide Hall and Bud Shank, US tenorist Scott Hamilton and more recently in collaboration with New York guitarist Peter Bernstein who appears on her critically acclaimed new CD ‘Quietly There’. Find links below to two tracks from the album.

WILD FIELDS presents The Ash Walker Trio

  • 21-24 The Royal Arcade Norwich, England, NR2 1NQ United Kingdom (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

We are hyped to to be working with the Wild Fields team on bringing Norwich some great acts this summer. Serving food from hand selected independent vendors and drinks from any one of three bars, good vibes are guaranteed.

Ash Walker trio

@ashwalkermusic
@wildpathsfestival

Doors 6pm Music 7.30-10pm

Notting Hill has long been a hub for the multicultural diaspora that has transformed the sound of London. Going right back to the days of Colin MacInnes, documented in City Of Spades, right through to the birth of the Notting Hill Carnival, The Clash and Ladbroke Grove stalwarts like Norman Jay. In recent years, that has been somewhat eroded by the arrival of new upscale residents like Tory MP Michael Gove or actress Keira Knightley. But lately, a chink in the relentless armour of gentrification has appeared in the shape of Ash Walker, producer, DJ, dedicated Afro-futurist and man-about-town.

He is now on his fourth album, Astronaut – the second for Night Time Stories – the accomplished follow-up to Aquamarine. The album is the sum total of his influences – and then some. Travelling from Dilla to D’Angelo, João Gilberto to Johnny Clarke, Inflo to K15, deep house to Soul Vibrations, hyper modern to crackly classics, but all with that unmistakeable swing and groove that is a key component in the Walker yard.

The gestation of Astronaut took somewhat longer than initially planned, no thanks to the looming presence of the pandemic, which banjaxed the entire industry. Walker, however, used that time wisely and the album you have before you, is a product of those elongated times, both in terms of experience but also the finished product.

“This was going to come out in 2020. It’s going to do great things. Then everything happened the way it did, and then I thought, do you know what? I’m not going to complain. I’m not going to kick off about it not coming out sharpish. So that sort of got in the way, but then I took the time to reach out to people. It was the lockdown where everyone just didn’t have much to do. I’m going to take this opportunity to start hollering at some people that are bigger and better and that I look up to.” And holler, he did.

While his previous album, Aquamarine, where the only collaborators were buddy Laville and trumpeter Yazz Ahmed (both of whom return here too), this time, there are contributions from the London jazz fraternity in Ebi Soda, Oscar Jerome and Joe Armon-Jones, plus vocalists like Londoner Andrew Ashong, former Lamb frontperson Lou Rhodes and Detroit don Amp Fiddler, Tru Thoughts’ duo Denitia and Sly 5th Ave and fellow Night Time Stories’ artist, Kennebec. An album of all the talents.

“With people like Amp, Sly and Denitia, I feel like because of the pandemic, It made people in the States feel a bit more accessible to me,” Ash avers. “Normally, I would’ve felt like if I’d have sent them a song, they’d be like, ‘Who’s this weird English dude sending us a tune? What’s he done lately?’” He nervously sent out the beats and was thrilled with the response: “I sent Amp the track and he was like, ‘I don’t like the track. I love it.’” Job done.

Perhaps the most noticeable thing about Astronaut is what a step forward the production is from Aquamarine, the sound of a growing confidence in his ideas, what Ash calls his “musical gumbo”, not just in the quality of the songs, but how the album as a whole sounds. He brought in Grammy-nominee Barry Jamieson to help with the mix (Barry is a long-time collaborator with Sasha and has remixed Madonna and Britney Spears). He really helped focus Ash’s ideas. There’s a pristine feel, a clarity to the slightly dialled-down mix that really helps the songs shine, although Ash laughs, “I cake on reverb and delay because I’m a proper reggae boy!”

On the cryptically-titled ‘Babylonian Triangle Of Captivity’, featuring Eli Soda, Will Heaton’s pleading trombone drives the track like a dusty old Blue Note release, while Lou Rhodes has never sounded better than on album opener ‘Only Love’. If the last album was (in Ash’s words) underwater jazz, what is Astronaut? Ash chuckles: “I suppose it’s evolved from underwater jazz into deep space soul fusion.”

“I’m just super happy that I’ve had such experienced help this time,” explains Ash. “Whereas before, I felt like all my albums were just throwing a bunch of my tunes together and rolling the dice and hoping for the best. Sort of message in a bottle out to sea in Brighton, and hoping it landed in Ghana, do you know what I mean? Now it’s a little bit more tactical.”

An album bonus for all synthesthetes, one of Ash’s friends, Ezra, offered to create a scent to accompany the sound of the album. “He concocted this deep space fragrance, which is hard to describe, but we’re going to be doing hand-rolled incense.” Scratch and sniff Astronaut? You betcha.

“I’m endlessly fascinated by trying to do better,” explains Ash. “breaking down those barriers and crossing those genres. Trying to push myself outside of my comfort zone to see if I can do something that might not work. Then seeing how I can make that work. It’s something that I live for, man. So the plan is for people to be able to put their rose-coloured record on the turntable, burn their incense, and soak up the flavour of Astronaut” Ash Walker: ready for lift-off.

Emerging Regions with Steve Daniels - Norwich Wine Week

Take your place at a very special one off event for Norwich Wine Week with YALM suppliers, Hallgarten wines.

We are super pleased to have Steve Daniels (head wine buyer) with us for the day to explore wines from emerging regions in our private dining room.

We have two very limited opportunities (one lunch and one evening session - book below) to taste a selection of 6 esoteric wines from emerging regions paired with small plates from Eric Snaith and his team.

Steve Daniel, Head of Buying at Hallgarten & Novum Wines, is famed for having one of the most respected palates in the industry and with introducing modern Greek wine into the UK.

Following a highly successful 16 year career as buying director in the golden age of Oddbins where he helped to win the coveted Wine Merchant of The Year Award 15 times, Daniel went on to work as a consultant for many of the big names in wine, then set up his own agency, Novum Wines, before becoming part of the Hallgarten team.

Leading the buying team since 2010, Daniel has helped steer the wine portfolio to become one of the most respected in the industry and the go-to supplier for esoteric wines.

Established in 1933 and purchased by Coterie Holdings in 2023, Hallgarten & Novum wines is one of the UK's leading 'specialist' wine distributors. With over 90 years of experience, Hallgarten imports wines from producers in all corners of the winemaking world, supplying the country's premium On and Off Trade.

In 2018, the business achieved the ISO 14001 accreditation for its dedication to minimising its environmental impact, as well as successfully meet all criteria to attain Silver Investors in People accreditation in 2023.

Hallgarten has been awarded the IWSC Wine Distributor Trophy 2023 The Drinks Business Drinks Company of the Year 2023 and Drinks Business On-Trade Supplier of the Year 2021; European Merchant of the Year in 2020 and 2019 by the Sommelier Wine Awards; and the prestigious International Wine Challenge Merchant Wine List of the Year Award in 2019 and 2021.

Kessoncoda

Doors 6pm Music 7.30-10pm

West London’s Kessoncoda are the duo of drummer Tom Sunney and keyboardist Filip Sowa. Standing firm between acoustic tradition and electronica, they are founded on a unique blend of melodic ostinato-laced piano and unwavering drums. Drawing on their array of musical interests, Filip and Tom take influence from rock, electronica, ambient, breakbeat and soundtracks for film and artists such as Squarepusher, Radiohead and Clark all hot-housed in their unique studio set-up, a shed at the bottom of Tom’s garden.

Like former and present Gondwana Records label mates such as GoGo Penguin and Portico Quartet there’s something strongly cinematic about Kessoncoda’s music, like a narrative arc which unfolds through different themes and moods, with an ebb-and-flow of intensity, as breath-taking swells of melody burst into being, eventually to resolve in a wondrous climax.

It’s the perfect union of complementary personalities that gives Kessoncoda their unique drive, of headlong sticksman Tom with his extraordinary offbeat pummel, together with thoughtful keysman Filip, with his ostinato melodiousness. The title Outerstate also reflects their location on the metropolitan outskirts of West London, and equally their existence at a distinct remove from any scene, as they dreamt up their soundworld in hermetic isolation. Now, though, they’re ready to go public and something tells us that Outerstate is just the beginning of something. From Tom’s shed to the world, Kessoncoda are ready to go global! Kessoncoda’s debut album Outerstate is release on July 12th on Gondwana Records.

Blood on the Clocktower (Beginner Friendly) at Yalm

  • 21-24 The Royal Arcade Norwich, England, NR2 1NQ United Kingdom (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Slice & Dice present Blood on the Clocktower.

We’ll be doing a special evening of Blood on the Clocktower at Yalm on Monday 1st April which is suitable for beginners and experienced players alike! We are running two games so please be sure to buy for the correct time. Games will be at 6pm and 8pm, please arrive promptly for a quick tutorial before we get started.

In the quiet village of Ravenswood Bluff, ‌a demon walks amongst you...

A Demon is on the loose, murdering by night and disguised in human form by day. Some players have bits of information, others have abilities that fight the evil or protect the innocent. But the Demon and its evil minions are spreading lies to create confusion. Will the good townsfolk put the puzzle together in time to execute the true demon and save themselves? Or will evil overrun this once peaceful village?

Blood on the Clocktower is a bluffing game enjoyed by 5 to 15 players on opposing teams of Good and Evil, overseen by a Storyteller player who conducts the action and makes crucial decisions. The goal of the game is to successfully identify and execute the demons before they outnumber the townsfolk.

During the 'day' players talk openly and whisper privately to trade knowledge or spread lies, culminating in a player's execution if a majority suspects them of being Evil. During 'night' time, players close their eyes and are woken one at a time by the Storyteller to gather information, spread mischief, or kill.
