FOLK AT YALM presents Will Pound & Jenn Butterworth

Join us for an extraordinary evening with Will Pound & Jenn Butterworth, a virtuosic duo celebrated across the UK and beyond for their electrifying interplay, improvisational flair and deep roots in traditional music. Born from a chance meeting at a folk session in 2018, their musical partnership quickly became a viral sensation during lockdown, bringing their dynamic performances to audiences around the world.

Drawing from English and Scottish folk traditions with influences from blues, gypsy jazz and global folk styles, Will and Jenn weave performances that feel alive, spontaneous and utterly captivating. On stage they engage in a playful musical cat and mouse — improvising and responding to one another in the moment, showcasing extraordinary instrumental skill and creative conversation through sound.

Will Pound is one of the most acclaimed harmonica and melodeon players of his generation, known for pushing the boundaries of his instruments with breathtaking virtuosity and deep traditional grounding. Jenn Butterworth is a sought-after guitarist and singer — awarded Musician of the Year at the Scots Trad Music Awards and nominated for a BBC Radio 2 Folk Award — renowned for her rhythmic drive, expressive playing and work with acclaimed ensembles like Kinnaris Quintet.

Their live shows are energetic, unpredictable and utterly compelling — from blues-tinged reels that will make you dance, to poignant strains of melody that linger long after the final note.

“ONE OF THE WORLD’S TOP HARMONICA PLAYERS” – The Telegraph (on Will Pound)

Their improvisations — alternating between –blistering drive and tender interplay — have captured the attention of audiences and critics alike, marking them as a duo who redefine what a folk performance can be.

Expect a night of dazzling musicianship, bold rhythm, joyful energy and the kind of spontaneous music-making that stays with you.

The Power of Play: Stories, Play, and Building Experiences with Niky Elison

Overview

Speaker: Niky Elison Where: Private room at Yalm, Norwich When: 26th November, 11:30am–1:30pm Who is it for: Everyone

Hosted by: Half Time Lunch Club

Join communications & strategy expert Niky Elison for an honest round-table chat on storytelling, play, and the growing games industry with top food & real networking.

Let’s be honest, we all spend too much time staring at our desks. This is your chance to step away, grab some amazing food, and have real, round-table chats with other business and creative people. There are no stuffy corporate vibes here, just good energy, honest talk, and a proper chance to build connections and swap stories.

Our guest speaker is Niky Elison. As a Communications & Strategy Expert with a massive passion for stories and play, Niky is part of the team at Shuck—a community-led co-development game studio. They work with talent right across East Anglia to produce everything from web, mobile, VR, and AR games to immersive brand-led experiences.

Today, we are chatting about what actually drove Shuck to form and the rapidly growing games industry right here in Norfolk. We will also be diving into gamification for non-gamers: exploring how regular businesses that have absolutely nothing to do with video games can use the concepts of "play" to genuinely connect with their audiences and build unforgettable brand experiences.

Here is how the lunch shapes up:

👉 11:30am – Grab a drink, meet some new people, and settle in.
👉 12:00pm – A 30-minute round-table Q&A with Niky.
👉 12:30pm – Order up some delicious food and drink from Yalm's kitchens and eat together.
👉 1:30pm – Head home feeling full, connected, and fired up for the afternoon.

💬 Got a question for Niky or a story of your own to share? Bring it along.

Norwich Jazz Club presents: The Best of Basie

The Front Row Big Band plays The Best of Basiefeaturing Crystal Cowban (vocals)

The Norwich-based Front Row Big Band led by the genial tenor saxophonist and raconteur Martin Eaton have just celebrated their 3rd birthday. It’s been a busy 3 years that have included themed shows, Swing Dances and concerts working with virtuoso trumpeter Mike Lovatt, peerless singer Matt Ford and multi-reed genius Alan Barnes.

Tonight they delve into the back-catalogue of the great Count Basie from the 1930’s onwards, including his collaborations with singers Joe Williams, Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra and especially The First Lady Of Song - the legendary Ella Fitzgerald.

Basie was renowned for having the most dynamically-swinging bands over a 49-year band-leading career, introducing star soloists saxophonists Lester Young and Eddie ”Lockjaw” Davis, plus trumpeters Harry Edison, Joe Newman and Thad Jones - all working round The Count’s economical piano style and Freddie Greene’s superb rhythm guitar-playing.

Expect an evening of swinging jazz with detours into the world of James Bond, The Beatles (and with the band's must-see annual A Swingin’ Christmas gig at Dunston Hall just around the corner) a couple of Basie based Christmas tunes.

Spend a Saturday morning learning modern calligraphy with me! This workshop provides everything you need to know and a kit to take home.

Please note the workshop will finish at 11:55.

No experience is necessary.

A two hour workshop - you can take some time out and spend some time on your own, or come with friends and family to try your hand at a new skill. A beginners calligraphy kit is included for you to keep and take home as well as your final work.

What is in the kit? You will have a pen holder, nib, a jar of black ink, my own handmade gold ink, along with worksheets, practise paper and some luxury card, with envelopes and gift tags and a box to store it all in.

What will we do? We will begin with an introduction to modern calligraphy techniques, some warm up strokes before practising the alphabet and then moving on to some words and styles so we can create our own pieces. There will be full guidance throughout and I will be there to help you and answer any further questions you might have.

Can I buy more card and ink colours to continue my practise and make more at home? Yes! I have lots of additional extras available to buy at each workshop, from extra practise paper and books, to my own handmade metallic inks as well as a variety of nibs, pen holders and brush pens.

But my handwriting is rubbish! That doesn’t matter at all. I’ll tell you a secret - so is mine! This is all about slowing it down, taking it easy and going with the flow. It is easier than it looks, you will have fun and you will be so proud of what you achieve!

I’m left handed - does that matter? Not at all, there are many left handed calligraphers!

Is there a group limit? Yes - there will be a maximum number of people per workshop to allow each person has full support and I can answer everyones questions should you have them.

Is food available? Yes - Yalm is a food hall located in The Royal Arcade in Norwich City Centre. Why not make more of an occasion of it and get some food at Yalm for lunch after - if you haven’t been yet then now is the perfect chance for an exciting meal out after learning something new - a perfect day!
