Our Story

Showcasing the finest independent kitchens

Work began in July 2022 on an extensive re-development of the former Jamie’s Italian. Inspired by the rise of quality foodhalls up and down the country, a group of entrepreneurs set out to revitalise the historic space in The Royal Arcade, using it as an opportunity to showcase Norfolk’s finest food producers, in a relaxed setting.

Committed to supporting local chefs and offering an exciting range of flavours from around the world, Yalm is designed for universal appeal, whether it’s brunch, lunch, dinner, or a group celebration. Kitchens have been carefully selected based on the quality of the produce used in their menu, and the passion and energy they bring.

Yalm (pronounced Yaarm) is a Norfolk word, meaning, “to eat hungrily”, and is fitting with our aspirations to keep it local and offer a new kind of dining experience for all to enjoy.

Our History

From Skipper to Yalm 1899 – Today

George Skipper was Norwich’s best known and most original architect.  According to Sir John Betjeman ‘he was to Norwich what Gaudi was to Barcelona’. Skipper was responsible for the designs of the city’s most notable commercial buildings including The Daily Standard building, Jarrolds, the Commercial Chambers and the Norwich Union offices.

On May 24th 1899 city dignitaries celebrated the opening of its new shopping arcade “The Royal Arcade”. Arcade shopping was very much in vogue and brought the fashionable, exotic and continentally influenced architecture of Art Nouveau to Norwich for the first time.

Today, The Royal Arcade offers shoppers a unique and eclectic mix of independent retailers and has become one of the city’s most iconic attractions.
